Harikatha Delivered on the Day of Snana Yatra

Harikatha, Sreela Bhakti Ballabh Tirtha Goswami Maharaj

In this harikatha, Srila Gurudev elaborately narrates the Holy appearance of Lord ‘Jagannath’, ‘Baladeva’ and ‘Subhadra’ in Nilachal Dham. While mother Rohini was narrating the glories of the love vraja-gopis have for Krishna, Krishna and Balaram came there and listening to those glories, a great change of feeling came over Krishna, Balaram and Subhadra, so great that Their arms and legs entered Their bodies. Out of boundless compassion for His devotees, the Lord agreed to give His darshan in that form, manifested out of the love of the gopis. Guru Maharaj also narrates how Lord Jagannath came to Chakdaha, bound by the love of His dear most devotee Jagadish Pandit.

  • Today is a very auspicious Tithi. Today is Purnima Tithi of Jyestha month. By accepting this Purnima Tithi, Lord ‘Jagannath’, ‘Baladeva’ and ‘Subhadra’ appeared in this world. It is written in the scriptures, that Lord Jagannath became pleased with the devotion and penance of Svayambhu Manu, first of the fourteen Manus, and appeared in this world on this day. Lord Jagannath ordered King Indradumnya Maharaj to perform a bathing ceremony of Jagannath, Baladeva and Subhadra on this Tithi. Indradumnya Maharaj was the King of Avanti-nagar of Malwa region. He was a great devotee of the Lord. The Lord appears to a great devotee only. Jagannath appeared as ‘Darubrahma’ — a wooden deity.

One day of the Brahma is the life span of fourteen Manus and one night is also the life span of fourteen Manus. We cannot even calculate it. Such Three hundred and sixty-five days makes one year of Brahma, and one hundred years is the life span of Brahma. We cannot even comprehend. The twenty-eighth Chaturyuga of the seventh Manvantara is currently going on. In the first Dwiparardh, Brahma’s half life, Lord Nilmadhav appeared in Sankha-kshetra to rescue the fallen souls. And in the second Dwiparardh, in Satyuga, King Indradumnya appeared in this world. He was a devotee of the Lord. The Lord appears for His devotees only.

yadā yadā hi dharmasya glānir bhavati bhārata
    abhyutthānam adharmasya tadātmānaṁ sṛjāmy aham
    paritrāṇāya sādhūnāṁ vināśāya ca duṣkṛtām
    dharma-saṁsthāpanārthāya sambhavāmi yuge yuge
    (Srimad Bhagavad Gita 4.7-8)

“Whenever, there is a decline of righteousness and a rise of unrighteousness, then for the protection of the sadhu, destruction of evil-doers, and establishing righteousness, the Lord appears.”

Our Gurudev commented that the Lord need not appear to kill the demons and to establish righteousness. He is All-Powerful, in a fraction of a second just by His will only, innumerable Brahmandas are destroyed and created. He need not come for this purpose. Whom do we call a sadhu? A sadhu sees everything in relation to the Lord, not to the world. He sees everything related to Vishnu and Vaishnava. All are Vaishnava, all are from Vishnu. All have come from His potency. But, when we come here in this world, we forget Him. We see everyone differently. But, a devotee sees everything in relation to the Lord. He does not see anyone as his enemy. The enemy is inside me, not outside in the world. We all are reaping the fruits of our own Karma. Others are instrumental, no one is the cause. So, devotees always remain peaceful.

Ambarish Maharaj is always peaceful. Prahlad Maharaj is always peaceful, even after so many atrocities. Because, they see everything belonging to the Lord, in relation to the Lord, by the Lord, and for the Lord. Whatever happens, it happens by the will of the All-Auspicious Lord. So Sadhus do not see anyone as their enemy. But the conditioned souls have a false ego, they see one as their friend and another as their enemy.

When King Indradumnya was remembering the Supreme Lord, the Lord sent a devotee to him. That devotee told the King, “The Lord has already appeared as ‘Nilmadhav’. If you will try to search for Him, He will mercifully manifest Himself to you.” King Indradumnya, immediately, sent his servants in all directions, in search of Lord Nilmadhav. Vidyapati was one of them. All other servants came back without any information, except Vidyapati. He went to the Sabar region. Vishwavasu was the leader of that region. Vidyapati met with him. Vishwavasu instructed his daughter Lalita to take care of Vidyapati and left for the worship of the Lord. When he returned, the transcendental fragrance of sandalwood was coming from his body. Vidyapati thought he might be coming after serving Lord Nilmadhav, whom he was searching for.

He asked Lalita, “Where does your father go every day?” She replied, “My father ordered me not to tell anyone where he is going, so I cannot tell you.” Then he asked Vishwavasu, “Where do you go every day, which temple do you visit?” He did not reply. A doubt arose in the heart of Vidyapati. A devotee can sense the transcendental subjects, but a non-devotee cannot. Transcendental subjects are revealed in the heart of a devotee. As Vidyapati was a devotee of the Lord, he got some indication and he decided to stay there. While serving Vidyapati, Lalita developed a loving relationship with him and she got the desire to marry him. She revealed her heart to her father, but her father told her that the marriage is not possible, because they belong to an uncivilized caste.

Listening so Lalita became morose and always crying approached him again and again to seek his permission. She was the only child of Vishwavasu and thus was his weakness. He finally told her that if Vidyapati gets ready to marry her, then he has no problem with it. She proposed Vidyapati. Vidyapati thought, if he could marry her, then as a wife she would come under his control. According to Sanatan-dharma, a woman cannot hide anything from her husband. So she would be bound to tell him about where her father was going daily for worship. He thought, ‘If I marry her then my purpose of staying here will be fulfilled’. He married her. And after a few days, he asked her again, “Where does your father go every day?”

She replied, “I cannot tell you, my father has ordered me not to tell anyone.”

Vidyapati told her, “Why did you marry me? A chaste woman should not hide anything from her husband. You should open your heart to me. If you do not, then it will not be fair.”

He frightened her. Then she told him. “Every day, my father goes to worship Lord Nilmadhav.”

He said, “I want to have Darshan of Lord Nilmadhav.”

She informed her father that her husband wanted to have Darshan of Lord Nilmadhav. Vishwavasu became angry with her. “Why did you tell him? I told you not to tell anyone.” She started crying. So, his heart melted and agreed to take her husband to Lord Nilmadhav. But, he put a condition that Vidyapati’s eyes must be covered whilst going and coming back. Lalita advised her husband, “You keep some mustard seeds with you. While going there you throw them on the path. After a few days, they will sprout and you can easily track the path to Lord Nilmadhav.” Vishwavasu took Vidyapati to Lord Nilmadhav by an indirect path.

They reached there and Vishwavasu opened the door of the temple. While having Darshan of Lord Nilmadhav, Vidyapati started crying out of love. Darshan of the Lord is possible only by eyes filled with love. Many times, I had the Darshan of Lord Jagannath in Puri, Jashada (Chakdah), but I did not have that realization.

Vidyapati got that realization and his eyes got filled with tears. Only devotion can attract the Lord. While Vidyapati was there he saw one crow falling from a tree and approaching one Kunda. He saw, whilst falling, he circumambulated a Vishnu temple and immediately got a catur-bhuja-rūpa (four-armed form) and was delivered. Seeing this, Vidyapati thought, “I will not lose this chance, I will also leave my body like this”. But that time a transcendental sound came. “Do not leave your body without informing your King about Lord Nilmadhav. He trusted you. He is a devotee. If you will not give him information about Lord Nilmadhav then you will commit an offence to him”.

Vishwavasu brought Vidyapati back with closed eyes and locked him in a room. His wife started crying, and at that time Vishwavasu thought, “Let me leave him and let whatever happens”. Because, when he had gone to Lord Nilmadhav to offer Him bhoga, that time the Lord told him,“I do not like to eat your fruits and flowers picked from the jungle. I will eat bhoga offered by the King.” He became afraid, “Oh! The Lord is speaking to me! He does not speak to me”. That is why out of fear he locked Vidyapati in a room, but now, his daughter was crying. He thought, “Whatever is there in my fate, let it happen” and thinking so, he released Vidyapati.

When his purpose was fulfilled, Vidyapati immediately went back to the King, Indradumnya Maharaj. The King became very happy to know about Lord Nilmadhav. By then the mustard seeds had sprouted, and they could then reach Nilmadhav temple easily. The army covered the whole region. But when they opened up the doors of the temple, they saw Lord Nilmadhav was not there. The Lord had disappeared from the temple.

The King immediately fell to the ground and started crying. And that time the Lord told him, “Do not cry, I will appear as Darubrahma”. The Lord is Adhokṣaja (one who is beyond the comprehension of the material senses). He is above the mind and intelligence. It is a long topic, and I will speak about it shortly. The Lord then came as Darubrahma. Three Darubrahma came. There were signs of śaṅkha, cakra, gadā and padma on Them. They came floating on the ocean and reached the shore. The King got the news about Them. A chariot was prepared to bring Them from there. But the Darubrahma were so heavy that the army was not able to lift Them. Even elephants could not lift Them. Then the King took shelter of the Lord. The Lord then ordered him to bring Vishwavasu to take Them out. One side Vishwavasu and the other side Vidyapati will hold Them and then They will simply come out. They both came and lifted the Darubrahma and They came out easily.

One time while we were at a Rath Yatra festival we were with Srila Gurudev in Puri and that time we saw that the government had decided not to call the King for his service. All were trying hard to lift Jagannath and to bring Him to the chariot but they were not able to lift Him. Everyone became worried, “What has happened?” They started praying to the Lord. The Lord ordered that they should call the King, “When He comes only then I will climb on the chariot.” Here, the King had locked himself in the room and was crying. They brought the King there and when he performed his service of cleaning the path with the broom, immediately the Lord climbed up on the chariot. So the Lord acts according to His desire.

Now, the Darubrahma were brought to the temple. King Indradumnya called carpenters to carve the deities from that Darubrahma, but no one was able to do so. Then the Lord Himself appeared as Ananta and said that he would carve the deities from Darubrahma, for that he would take twenty-one days. And no one should disturb him for those twenty-one days. The King agreed. For seven days they could hear the sound of carving from the closed room, but after that, it stopped. Fifteen=days passed but they did not hear any sound coming from that room. So they thought that the carpenter might have died as he was so old and he did not eat for so many days. Thinking so, they opened the door and they saw the incomplete deities of Baladeva, Subhadra and Jagannath. The King started crying, thinking that because of him it had happened so. But the Lord told him, “You did so by My desire only. It is My desire to be manifested in this incomplete form”.

Once when mother Rohini had gone to Dwarka, she told the Queens of Dwarka, “You all are so fortunate that Krishna has come to you. He has forgotten Vraja and He is with you.” Hearing this, the queens replied that, “It is not so, Krishn’s heart is still in Vraja only, only His body is here. In the night, We heard Him uttering the names of his Vraja friends or vraja-gopis, sometimes Subala Sakha, sometimes someone else’s name. He has never uttered our name.. His heart is there in Vraja. What love the vraja-vasis have for Him, He has never, even mistakenly, taken our names!”

The Queens of Dwarka requested mother Rohini to speak about the loving exchanges between Krishna and the vraja-vasis. Mother Rohini asked that she would narrate these pastimes in the absence of Krishna and Balaram. They all appointed Subhadra as a gatekeeper to stop Krishna and Balaram. But the Lord has said, mad-bhaktāḥ yatra gāyanti tatra tiṣṭhāmi nārada—wherever My devotees sing My glories I stay there. And while mother Rohini was narrating the glories of the love the vraja-gopis have for Krishna, there Krishna and Balaram came and listened to those glories and the hands and legs of Krishna, Balaram and Subhadra started shrinking. Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu seeing this Form, manifested out of the love of gopis, fell madly in love and ran to embrace Him. (We do not have that darshan.) We see Them without hands or legs.

Today we should also hear the glories of Jagadish Pandit. I will speak briefly. He was living in Pragjyotishpur before, currently known as Guwahati in Assam. He had a desire to stay on the bank of the holy river Ganges and perform Haribhajan. So he came to Mayapur along with his younger brother Hiranya and wife Dukhini and started living near the house of Jagannath Mishra and Sachi Mata, about two miles away from their house. A loving relationship developed between the two families. When Nimai appeared, Dukhini Mata out of motherly affection took Him on her lap and fed Him her milk. Jagadish Pandit and Dukhini Mata had parental affection for Nimai. Once Nimai performed a pastime to engage everyone in Harinam Sankirtan. At the time of His appearance, also taking the pretext of a lunar eclipse, He made everyone chant the Lord’s Name. Many a time He would cry and did not stop until Sachi Mata and all the other women clapped and chanted ‘Haribol! Haribol!’

On one Ekadashi day, He started crying and did not stop. All started chanting ‘Haribol! Haribol!’ But that day, He did not stop crying in spite of the chanting. Then an inquiry was made to Him, “What happened to You? Why are You crying so much? What do You want?” He replied, “Jagadish Pandit has offered naivedyaṁ to Lord Vishnu today, on the day of Ekadashi, I want to eat it.” Sachi Mata, Jagannath Mishra and all others were astonished, “How did He come to know that today is Ekadashi? Even He knows that Jagadish Pandit has prepared naivedyaṁ for Lord Vishnu, what is this?” Jagannath Mishra thought, “Jagadish Pandit is my friend, I will go and ask him.” He immediately ran to his house and asked, “Have you prepared naivedyaṁ for Lord Vishnu? What can I say? It will be an offence; my Son wants to eat naivedyaṁ before offering to the Lord. How can we give it to Him? But He is crying continuously. He will not stop until He takes it.”

Jagadish Pandit replied, “Gopal is speaking through Him, You please take this all for Him. Do not worry.” He accepted the service of Jagadish Pandit forcibly on the day of Ekadashi. Lord forcibly snatches the offerings from His devotees, but for a non-devotee, He does not even look back to their things. So much love He has for His devotees.

By the desire of Mahaprabhu, Jagadish Pandit went to Jagannath Puri from Mayapur and had Darshan of Jagannath Deva. He went to Jagannath Puri by foot with other Brahmins. When he was leaving Puri Dham to come back to his home, he started crying because of separation pangs from Jagannath Deva. How many of us have cried after having darshan of Jagannath Deva and while coming back from there? We have never cried. But Jagadish Pandit was crying. He did not have the desire to go back home. What kind of darshan he had! He is seeing the forms of Jagannath, Balaram and Subhadra, manifested out of the love of gopis!! That kind of darshan he was having.

Jagadish Pandit was not an ordinary person. Yagnik Brahmin’s wife in Krishna Lila manifested as Jagadish Pandit. He was an associate of the Lord from Vraja. So, he could see his worshipful Lord in that form and he started crying. Jagannath told him, “You could take Me with you to your home.”

“Who will allow me to take You?” He asked.

At the time of navakalevara—the pastime of replacing the transcendental Divine body of Lord Jagannath with a new one, then the existing kalevara is put underground. So Lord Jagannath said that he (Jagadish Pandit) can take Him along in the form of His existing kalevara. He then ordered the King in a dream. Jagadish Pandit again conversed with Lord Jagannath saying, “You are so heavy, how will I be able to lift and take You?” He replied, “I will become very light like a sponge, you can tie Me in a fresh cloth, hang it on a wooden stick and hold Me on your shoulder. Do not put Me on the earth. If you will put Me on earth then I will not go further from that place. This is My condition”. In that way, Jagadish Pandit was taking Him to Mayapur, to his home. There is a place near Mayapur, Chakradah. When King Bhagirath was taking the river Ganges with him for the liberation of the Sagar dynasty, the wheel of his chariot got stuck in the earth there in Chakradah. It is not an ordinary place, common people know it as Chakdah. It is also known as Pradyumna Nagar. After killing Samrasur, Pradyumna came there.

Jagadish Pandit arrived there. Then he gave Lord Jagannath to a Brahmin and told him, “Please hold Him on your shoulder for a while, I will take a bath in the Ganges and come back soon,” and he left to take a bath, but suddenly Lord Jagannath became so heavy, that Brahmin was not able to hold Him on his shoulder. He started shouting, “Please come fast, I am not able to hold Him!” But by the time Jagadish Pandit returned, he had put Him down on the earth beneath a banyan tree. And Lord Jagannath did not move further from that place. Jagadish Pandit also did not go to his home. He also started living under the banyan tree and started worshipping Him there. After that, the King of Krishna Nagar and other devotees of that area donated a thousand acres of land for the service of Lord Jagannath. They gave so many things in donations because they were religious people.

News spread in the area that Lord Jagannath Himself arrived from Purusottam Dhama and service of the Lord began there. But as time passed, it became difficult for the dynasty of Jagadish Pandit to maintain the livelihood and service of Lord Jagannath. They started to slowly sell the land. Only a small piece of land remained. Later, economically, they became unable to serve the Lord. So a devotee named Sri Sukruti Bandopadhyaya (also known as Panchoo Thakur) came to our Gurudev and requested him to take charge of that place. Gurudev told him, “This place belongs to you, we will preach here and will give you money to maintain this place.” But later they requested again and again so Guruji thought, “Jagannath Deva wants to give service to us,” so he accepted the service and everything changed there. A nice temple with so many rooms was constructed. A snāna-bedi (the place for bathing the deity) is also there. Every year a bathing ceremony takes place. I go there every year, but this year I could not go. From here we will remember Him and Pay innumerable obeisances to His feet and pray for His mercy.

Jagadish Pandit and Dukhini Mata had parental affection for Mahaprabhu. Nityananda Prabhu is an expansion of Baladeva and is non-different from Him. Jagadish Pandit had great faith in both Gaura and Nityananda. Gaura-Nityananda came and performed Sankirtan and then went back home. They came again and when They were leaving, Jagadish Pandit and Dukhini Mata started crying. That time Gauranga Mahaprabhu told them, “I will stay here as Gaura-gopal”. So Gaura-gopal vigrah is there. Bhagavan Das Babaji Maharaj’s Bhajan-kutir is also there. It is an auspicious place.

Today is the holy day of the disappearance of Mukunda Datta Thakur. He used to live in Chittagong, and from there he came to Nabadvipa and became a fellow student of Mahaprabhu at Gangadas Pandit’s Tol (school). Mahaprabhu used to ask His students questions, and then they used to answer, Mahaprabhu used to disprove their answers and again ask them more questions. Because of that, all the devotees used to fear Him. Mahaprabhu is a scholar of grammar. One day Mukunda Datta asked him about alaṅkāra of vyākaraṇa (grammar). Mahaprabhu gave a very nice answer to it. Mukunda Datta was surprised, an ordinary person cannot have such knowledge. He thought, “If He becomes a devotee then, how nice it will be! We do not like that he is arguing so much.” Mahaprabhu said, I would be a great devotee, and you all would see it later. When Mahaprabhu returned from Gaya, an intense ecstatic feeling of love for the Lord was seen in Him. Mahaprabhu then used to cry in separation for the Lord. Mukunda Datta used to sing songs appropriate for that mood as he was Madhukanth in Krishna Lila and used to sing for the pleasure of Krishna. Listening to Mukunda Datta, Advait Acharya and all others would become blissful.

He gave two important teachings. Pundarika Vidyanidhi, who came from Chattagram, was there. He was acting like a materialistic person to hide his devotion to the Lord. But Mukunda Datta knew that he was a great devotee, Vrishbhanu Maharaj, father of Radharani Herself in Krishna Lila. Mahaprabhu addressed him as the father, even before He met him. Mukunda Datta took Gadadhar Pandit to Pundarika Vidhyanidhi to have his Darshan but seeing him engaged in materialist activities, even Gadadhar Pandit, who was a Brahmachari by birth, with staunch faith, had his faith disturbed. He was upset and he told Mukunda, “What is this, you told me you will take me to have darshan of a great devotee, but is he a devotee? He is engaged in enjoying worldly things.” Then Mukunda understood the feelings of Gadadhar Pandit and he narrated a verse from Srimad Bhagavatam,

    aho bakī yaṁ stana-kāla-kūṭaṁ
    jighāṁsayāpāyayad apy asādhvī
    lebhe gatiṁ dhātry-ucitāṁ tato ’nyaṁ
    kaṁ vā dayāluṁ śaraṇaṁ vrajema
    (Srimad Bhagavatam 3.2.23)

“The sister of demon Bakasura, the evil Putana came to kill Krishna with kālakūṭa poison applied to her breast. She showed little so-called motherly affection, but still, He awarded her the position of a wet nurse. Is there anyone else I can take shelter of who is more merciful than this Krishna”?

As soon as he heard, Pundarika Vidhyanidhi fell to the floor in a swoon and various transcendental symptoms manifested in him. Gadadhar Pandit realized that he had committed an offense that He began to regret. Later on the advice of Mahaprabhu, he took initiation from Pundarika Vidhyanidhi.

One more important incident shows how the Lord teaches through His devotees. Mukunda had so much deep affection for Mahaprabhu that when He took Sanyas, Mukand felt so much pain. He sang Kirtan when Mahaprabhu took a bath before Sanyas, Mukunda had so much love for Him. When Mahaprabhu exhibited His mahā-prakāśa-līlā for twenty-one hours, He was bound by deep affection and love. He had called all the devotees and gave His audience in the form they had desired and awarded boons to them but He did not give this opportunity to Mukunda, who is very dear to Him. All devotees were surprised, why He was not showering mercy on Mukunda?

Srivas Pandit asked Mahaprabhu to be merciful to Mukunda, to which the Lord replied, “Mukunda is a pretentious wretch. His mind is not fixed. He is sometimes a perfect figure of humility, approaching Me holding the straw in his teeth, but the next moment he comes to strike Me with an iron rod. Sometimes he associates with devotees and sometimes associates with non-devotees, so he strikes Me with an iron rod and therefore he is not eligible for the darshan of My Divine form, being the controller of everything.”

Hearing Mahaprabhu's harsh words, Mukunda was deeply aggrieved and decided to quit his body. But before he did so he had Srivas Pandit inquire from Mahaprabhu if there is any chance of getting His darshan ever? Mahaprabhu replied, "He will get My darshan after ten million of his births." Hearing Mahaprabhu's reply, Mukunda forgot himself completely and danced while uttering repeatedly, "Mahaprabhu's words will never be untrue." In a moment Mukunda's ten million births were destroyed. Mahaprabhu freed him from his offenses and exhibited to him His opulent form at that very moment. Mahaprabhu, accepting His defeat, spoke, “I perpetually reside on Mukunda’s tongue. Wherever I will appear, you will get the service to sing for Me".
    (Chaitanya Bhagavat 2.10.260)

Mukunda condemned himself for not having any devotion in him. He sang the glories of devotion and through an example explained the terrifying state of being a non-devotee.

Mahaprabhu is giving a teaching here. He makes the devotee a medium to teach the worldly people. In Bengali there is a saying, the meaning of which is, “The mother-in-law teaches the daughter-in-law by instructing her daughter”. Thus the Supreme Lord imparts teachings to the worldly people by instructing His devotees.

Mahaprabhu used to quarrel with Sridhar Pandit. Sridhar Pandit is one amongst the twelve Gopal, the friends of Krishna and Balaram in Krishna Lila. They used to fight with Krishna while playing games. Sridhar Pandit is one amongst them. He played the role of a poor Brahmin in Mahaprabhu's pastimes, who made his living selling the products of his banana garden.

The Supreme Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu had the charming pastime of hungrily taking Sridhar’s foodstuffs without being invited to do so. While the Lord was still a student, Sridhar used to make his living by selling bananas, their flowers (called Mocha) and the core of the banana plant (called Thora). He would spend half of whatever little money he made in this way on worshipping the Ganges, and the other half on his necessities. Like Yudhisthira, he was a great devotee of the truth and would always tell the real price of the items he sold. Everyone in Navadvipa knew this and so would not haggle with him. But Mahaprabhu would come to Sridhar and give him only half the amount he was asking for his bananas, banana flowers or thora and then walk off with them. Every day, the two of them would pull back and forth on a bunch of bananas or something else, arguing for an hour or more over the price that was to be paid.

Every day they would argue for so long, and then finally Mahaprabhu would walk away with the goods leaving only half the asked price. Sridhar will always tell the truth and give the real price of each item, but the Lord will still only give him half of the amount he asked for and then take it. Sridhar would jump up and grab the item, trying to take it back, even pushing and shoving the Lord.
    (Chaitanya Bhagavat 2.9.163-5)

Even though the Lord argued with Sridhar, He saw that Sridhar did not become angry and hence took his wares. From a superficial point of view, it appears that Mahaprabhu was mistreating Sridhar by stealing from him, but the fact of the matter is that Sridhar allowed Him to get away with it. Upon seeing the Lord’s beauty, he would become completely enchanted and immersed in an ocean of joy, so how could he get angry with Him? While arguing with him, Mahaprabhu would delight in calling his names and insulting him, and sometimes even hinted at His own divine identity,

“Every day you buy things to offer to the Ganga. Why don’t you just give something to Me without charging anything? Don’t you know that I am the father of the Ganga that you worship? I assure you that this is the absolute truth!”
    (Chaitanya Bhagavat 2.9.178-9)

They finally came to a settlement and Sridhar agreed to daily give Mahaprabhu some bananas or other items from the banana tree for free. The Lord said, “Very well. There is no reason for you to give Me anything else. From then on, the Lord ate daily with great satisfaction from the little bowls made of banana bark given to him by Sridhar. The Lord thus eats anything that the devotee offers Him, but He rejects even luxurious items given to Him by a non-devotee.
    (Chaitanya Bhagavata 2.9.184-5)

On the day Mahaprabhu delivered Chand Kazi, He led His Sankirtan party through the conch-shell merchant area and weaver districts to Sridhar Pandit’s house. There He took a drink of water from Sridhar’s old, beaten iron water pot with great satisfaction. When Sridhar saw Mahaprabhu do this, he cried loudly and fell unconscious.

Mahaprabhu’s action was meant to teach us that we can attain devotion by drinking a devotee’s water. He wanted to show that the water from a devotee’s water jug, even though it is old and rusty, is still like nectar to the Supreme Lord Himself. By way of contrast, He ignores the proud non-devotee’s water, even if offered in a jewelled goblet.

When the Lord saw Sridhar’s tumbledown shack of a home from a distance, He laughed quietly from the inner joy He felt. He led the company of devotees along the path to Sridhar’s hut where He spotted an iron water pot full of holes. There was still a little water in it, and the Lord drank it thirstily. The Lord is bhakta-vatsala, ever affectionate towards His devotees, and this act overwhelmed Him with feelings of love. Tears poured from His eyes like the currents of the Ganges, and a wonderful kirtana began in Sridhar’s courtyard. All the devotees, led by Nityananda Prabhu and Advaita Prabhu, were crying. Ah, my heart breaks when I think of the great joy they all experienced on that day there at Sridhar’s house.
    (Bhakti-ratnakara 12.3136-41)

The Lord drank water from Sridhar’s iron water pot and then fulfilled the desires of every single devotee.
    (Chaitanya Charitamrita 1.17.70)

Mahaprabhu called Sridhar to show him His glorious form. When he arrived at Srivas Angan, he beheld the Lord’s form and fell to the ground in a faint. He was brought back to consciousness by the Lord’s voice and then, with the power that was given to him through the Lord’s mercy, he began to recite hymns of singing the glories of the Lord. Satisfied with Sridhar’s hymns of praise, Mahaprabhu offered him the eight mystic powers as a benediction, but Sridhar refused, saying that he only wanted service to the Lord’s lotus feet.

Lord Vishvambhar repeatedly urged Sridhar to ask for a boon. Finally, Sridhar said, “Lord, if you must give me something, then I ask for this: May that Brahmin boy who used to pinch my banana leaves and bark be my Lord, lifetime after lifetime. May I forever serve the lotus feet of that Brahmin boy who always used to argue with me.”
    (Chaitanya Bhagavata 2.9.223-5)
