Śrī Sadāśiva Paṇḍita

Book, Sreela Bhakti Ballabh Tirtha Goswami Maharaj

Sadāśiva Paṇḍita was a resident of Navadvīpa who participated in the beginnings of the saṅkīrtana movement. When Nityānanda Prabhu first arrived in Navadvīpa, He stayed in his house.

  • Sadāśiva Paṇḍita is considered a Caitanya branch of the tree of divine love. He was a resident of Navadvīpa who participated in the beginnings of the saṅkīrtana movement. When Nityānanda Prabhu first arrived in Navadvīpa, He stayed in his house.

Sadāśiva Paṇḍita placed all his hopes at the Lord’s feet. His house was Nityānanda Prabhu’s first residence in Navadvīpa. (Caitanya Caritāmṛta 1.10.34)

Sadāśiva Paṇḍita, in whose home Nityānanda Prabhu had previously been domiciled, also went [with the party of devotees to Jagannātha Purī]. (Caitanya Bhāgavata 3.8.19)

In Vṛndāvana Dāsa Ṭhākura’s Caitanya Bhāgavata, Sadāśiva Paṇḍita’s name is included in the list of devotees who were present in the kīrtana in the house of Śrīvāsa Paṇḍita, along with Gopīnātha, Jagadīśa, Śrīmān, Śrīdhara, Vakreśvara, Śrīgarbha and Śuklāmbara. (Caitanya Bhāgavata 2.8.115)

He was one of the Lord’s companions when He engaged in water sports in the Ganges. He was also one of the first to witness the Lord’s displays of ecstatic love after He returned from Gaya. Mahāprabhu ordered Sadāśiva Paṇḍita and other devotees to assemble in the house of His dear associate Śuklāmbara Brahmacārī.

[The Lord said,] “You [Śrīmān Paṇḍita] and Sadāśiva Paṇḍita should also come tomorrow to Śuklāmbara’s house. (Caitanya Bhāgavata 2.1.40)

Sadāśiva, Murāri, Śrīmān and Śuklāmbara, and all of the Lord’s other devoted followers assembled there. (Caitanya Bhāgavata 2.1.81)

On the same occasion, the Lord revealed to the world how dear He considered Sadāśiva by unveiling His heart’s sadness to him.

“I will reveal all my sadness to you [Śrīmān Paṇḍita], Sadāśiva and Murāri Gupta. (Caitanya Bhāgavata 2.1.70)

When Mahāprabhu decided to put on a performance of Vraja-līlā in the house of Candraśekhara Ācārya, He gave the responsibility for costumes and makeup to Sadāśiva and Buddhimanta Khān. Sadāśiva was ecstatic to receive this order from the Lord.

The Lord called Buddhimanta Khān and Sadāśiva and told them to go immediately to arrange for the actors’ costumes. (Caitanya Bhāgavata 2.18.7)

Overjoyed, Buddhimanta and Sadāśiva immediately went home to fulfil the duties given to them by the Lord. (Caitanya Bhāgavata 2.18.14)

Here [at the house of Candraśekhara Ācārya], Buddhimanta Khān and Sadāśiva Paṇḍita made all kinds of costume arrangements to help Lord Gaurāṅga put on a performance as Lakṣmī so that the entire universe would become intoxicated by the singing of the Holy Names. (Bhakti-ratnākara 12.2903-4)
