Enchanting Pastime of Gaura-Gadadhar
Article, Sreela Bhakti Ballabh Tirtha Goswami Maharaj
Gadadhara Pandit is the fountainhead of all sakti-tattva, and non-different from Mahaprabhu and the embodiment of love, Vrandavanesvari Srimati Radhika. After return from Gaya when Mahaprabhu was desperately and intensely yearning for the darshan of Krishna, Gadadhar Pandi would pacify him. Seeing this Sachi Mata told him, ‘Gadadhar, you always stay near Nimai.’ From that time onwards Gadadhar Pandit stayed near Mahaprabhu always. Here is an account of the pastime narrated by Srila Gurudev which gives us a glimpse of Gadadhara Pandit’s love and his total surrender to Mahaprabhu.

During the Chaturmasa-vrata (the four months vow during the monsoon season) all the devotees from Nabadwipa (from Gauda-desh) used to come to Mahaprabhu at Nilachal and used to stay with Him until Rathayatra. Mahaprabhu had the desire to go to Vrindavan for a long time. After the third year’s stay of Gaudiya devotees in Nilachal Dham, when they left after Rathayatra, Mahaprabhu decided to go to Vrindavan. King Prataparudra was a great devotee of the Lord and he knew all the places of his kingdom where Mahaprabhu was going to pass during His journey to Vrindavan. The Lord gave him the service opportunity to make arrangements at different places. Mahaprabhu started His journey to Vrindavan and that time Ramananda Raya and other devotees also joined Him. Gadadhar Pandit also joined Mahaprabhu for Vrindavan. Mahaprabhu became worried about Gadadhar and after a while asked him to go back to Nilachal so not to break his vow of Kshetra-sanyas. In reply to that, Gadadhar told Him that wherever He is, that place is Nilachal Dham. He also mentioned that let this vow of Kshetra-sanyas go to Rasatal (the bottom planet), he is not worried about it at all. Such a strong loving attachment Gadadhar has towards Mahaprabhu. He is not able to bear His separation even for a moment. Those who have entered into the realm of spontaneous loving devotion (Prema-bhakti) only, can comprehend his feelings, not those who follow the devotion with rules and regulations (Vaidhi-bhakti).
Mahaprabhu again said, “Giving up vows would amount to offense; you are abandoning the service of Gopinath.”
Gadadhar replied, “By serving You, crores of Gopinath will be served. I will take all the responsibilities for any offense to Gopinath.”
Can anybody understand his love? Gadadhar said, “I will not go with you. I am going to see Sachi Mata.” Saying so, he started walking alone. When they arrived at Cuttack, Mahaprabhu again called Gadadhar and asked him, “Do you want to fulfill My desire or your own desire? Do you want My happiness or your happiness? If you wish to make Me happy then you should not leave Purushottam Dhama.” Hearing so Gadadhar fainted and fell down. We will not understand what this love is! Such a deep attachment!
Mahaprabhu exhibited His earthly pastimes for forty-eight years. And after Mahaprabhu’s departure Gadadhar Pandit remained on this earth only for eleven months, always absorbed in the separation grief of Mahaprabhu. Mahaprabhu appeared to distribute this highest Divine Love to all the conditioned souls of this world. To attain this love we have to surrender to Gadadhar Pandit and pray for his mercy. We have to also pray to our Guruvarga for their mercy. Then we can attain this supreme bliss, Unnata-ujjvala-rasa. Even Krishna is desirous of relishing that love. Krishna says,
aiśvarya-jñānete saba jagat miśrita
aiśvarya-śithila-preme nahi mora prītaIn aisvarya-bhava, in love with reverence, love becomes sankucita, constricted. Therefore, in mora putra, mora sakhā, mora prāṇa-pati such bhava (considering Him to be their own son, bosom friend, the owner of one’s life), there is no hesitation in the service of Nandanandana Krishna.
Vallabha Bhatta came to Mahaprabhu and desired to listen to scriptural conclusions from Him. As he had false pride in him, Mahaprabhu showed indifference towards him. So he went to Gadadhar Pandit who is very soft natured, the same as Rukmini has in Krishna’s pastimes. When Krishna showed indifference to Rukmini, she thought Krishna would leave her and thinking so, she used to become afraid and used to cry. So Gadadhar Pandit also became afraid that Mahaprabhu would leave his association when He exhibiting some sort of coldness towards him because of his association with Vallabh Bhatta. He immediately went to Mahaprabhu and, holding His feet, he cried. So Mahaprabhu is called Gadadhar-prana, Gadadhar’s life and soul.
