Mahaprabhu’s Mercy On Haridas Thakur At Siddha Bakul

‘Dainya’ understood as humility is an important limb of saranagati and is predominantly and naturally found in great abundance in the associates of Mahaprabhu. In this harikatha Srila Gurudev narrates the glorious life of Haridas Thakur, a personal associate of Mahaprabhu and how he performed intense bhajan at Siddha Bakul from where he entered into nityalila.

  • When Haridas Thakur came to Jagannath Puri, he got a place named ‘Balisahi’ to stay in which one hut and one ‘Tota’ a garden were there. The place of Mahaprabhu we have seen, is not such a big place then how thousands and thousands persons came there and had darśan of Mahaprabhu? Even two hundred to three hundred persons cannot sit there how can thousands and thousands? It is said that the Lord, in a small child form, stayed on one leaf of a Banyan tree with the full brahmand in Him, then why cannot Kashi Mishra's bhavan accommodate lakhs of persons? Mahaprabhu can do it, we cannot. At that place many devotees came from Gauda-desh and Mahaprabhu is giving them garlands, sandal wood etc. Then He inquired about Haridas Thakur, “Where is Haridas?” One person went outside to see him. He saw Haridas Thakur was offering obeisance to Mahaprabhu from a far distance. He told, “Come, Mahaprabhu is calling you.”

Haridas Thakur replied, “No, I am so lowly a person. I am not allowed to enter into Jagannath temple and Kashi Mishra is a Brahmin, so I should not enter in his house also. That place would become impure. So I should not go there, I offer my pranāms from here.”

When that person informed about this conversation to Mahaprabhu, He went there. When He came to know from Haridas Thakur that he wanted to stay in a secluded place, then he asked Kashi Mishra for such a place in a garden of his house. Kashi Mishra replied, “Everything belongs to You only. Whatever You want to do, You can do.” Then Mahaprabhu went to Haridas Thakur, Haridas immediately fell down in His lotus feet. Mahaprabhu offered him a place near to Him in the garden of Kashi Mishra but out of humbleness Haridas did not accept it. Rupa Goswami and Sanatan Goswami also did not stay there considering themselves the servants of a Muslim King and so impure. Such humbleness, we cannot even imagine! Haridas Thakur is Brahma himself. Then finally Mahaprabhu gave him this place (Siddha Bakul) to stay.

An Arjuna tree stick is given as a tooth brush to Lord Jagannath in the morning. One day, by mistake or by some Divine arrangement one Bakul tree stick got mixed with Arjuna tree sticks and were offered to Lord Jagannath. The offered sticks then used to get distributed to special persons. That day Mahaprabhu got the Bakul tree stick as a prasadam of Jagannath. Mahaprabhu took that stick and came to meet Haridas Thakur at Siddha Bakul. Then He sowed that stick there and immediately it manifested as a big tree. We call it a 'Bakul tree'. Haridas Thakur used to chant three lakhs Holy Names daily beneath this tree and Mahaprabhu Himself used to come here to give him His darśan. After having a bath in the ocean, Mahaprabhu used to go to Haridas Thakur, Rupa and Sanatan Goswami to give them His darśan. So Haridas Thakur performed Bhajan here.
