Glories of Sri Jagadish Pandit
Harikatha, Sreela Bhakti Ballabh Tirtha Goswami Maharaj
Jagadish Pandit and his wife Dukhini had the same kind of parental affection for the little Nimai as Jagannath Mishra and Sachi Devi themselves. Dukhini was like a mother to Him and even sometimes acted as His wet-nurse. Nimai, the son of Sachi, is none other than the son of Yashoda, the Supreme Lord Krishna. It is not possible for anyone but an eternal associate of the Lord to have the good fortune to treat Him like a son in this way.

Jagadish Pandit was living in former Praga-jyotishpur, now known as Guwahati, in Assam. He had a desire to stay on the bank of the holy river Ganges and perform Hari-bhajan. So he came to Mayapur along with his younger brother Hiranya and wife Dukhini and started living near the house of Jagannath Mishra and Sachidevi, about two mile away from their house. A very loving relation developed between two families. When Nimai appeared, Dukhini Mata out of motherly affection took Him on her lap and fed Him her milk. Jagadish Pandit and Dukhini Mata had parental affection for Nimai. Nimai used to perform many pastimes to engage everyone in Harinam Sankirtan. At the time of His appearance also, taking the pretext of lunar eclipse, He made everyone to chant His name. Many a times He used to start crying and do not stop until Sachi Mata and all other women clap and chant haribol haribol.
On one Ekadashi day, he started crying and did not stop. All started chanting haribol haribol. But that day, He did not stop crying in spite of chanting. Then an inquiry was made to Him, “What happened to you? Why are crying so much? What do You want?” He replied, “Jagadish Pandit has offered naivaidya to Lord Vishnu today, on the day of Ekadashi, I want to eat it.” Then Sachi Mata and Jagannath Mishra and all others were astonished, “How has He come to know that today is Ekadashi? And even He knows that Jagadish Pandit has prepared naivaidya for Lord Vishnu. What is this?” Jagannath Mishra thought, “Jagadish Pandit is my friend, I will go and ask him”. He immediately ran to his house and asked, “Have you prepared naivaidya for Lord Vishnu? What should I say? It will be an offense; my Son wants to eat naivaidya before offering to Lord.”
Pandit replied “How can we give it to Him?”
“But He is crying continuously. He will not stop until He has eaten it.”
“Gopal is speaking through Him, You please take all this for Him. Do not worry.”
He accepted the service of Jagadish Pandit forcibly on the day of Ekadashi. The Lord forcibly snatches the offerings from His devotees, but for a non-devotee, he does not even look back to their things. So much love He has for His devotees.
By the desire of Mahaprabhu, Jagadish Pandit went to Jagannath Puri from Mayapur and had darshan of Jagannath Deva. He went to Jagannath Puri by foot with other Brahmins. When he was leaving Puri-dham to come back to his home, he started crying because of separation pangs from Jagannath Deva. How many of us have cried after having darsan of Jagannath Deva and while coming back from there? We have never cried. But he was crying. He did not have desire to go back to home. What kind of darshan he had! He is seeing the forms of Jagannath, Balaram and Shubhdra, manifested out of the love of gopis!! That kind of darsan he was having. Jagadish Pandit was not an ordinary person. Yagnik Brahmin’s wife in Krishna-lila has manifested as Jagadish Pandit. He is an associate of the Lord from Vraja-dham. So, he could see his worshipable Lord in that form and he started crying. Jagannath Dev told him, “You could take Me with you to your home”.
Pandit asked, “Who would allow to take You with me?”
“I would order the King to give Myself to you”
At the time of Navakalevar—the pastime of replacing the transcendental Divine body of Jagannath Dev to a new one, the existing Kalevar is put underground. So Jagannath Dev told that he (Jagadish Pandit) can take Him along in the form of His existing Kalevar.
Thus He ordered the King in a dream.
Then Jagadish Pandit asked Jagannath Dev, “You are so heavy how I would be able to lift and take you?”
He replied, “I would become very light like a sponge, you can tie Me in a fresh cloth, hang on a wooden stick and hold on your shoulder. Do not put Me on the earth. If you would put Me on the earth then I would not go further from that place. This is My condition.”
In that way Jagadish Pandit was taking Him to Mayapur to his home. There is a place near Mayapur, Chakradah, where King Bhagirath was taking the river Ganges with him for liberation of the Sagar dynasty and the wheel of his chariot got stuck in earth at that place. It is not an ordinary place. Common people know it as Chakdah . It is also known as Pradyumna Nagar. After killing Samrasur, Pradhyumna came there.
Jagadish Pandit arrived there. Then he gave Lord Jagannath to a Brahmin and told him, “Please hold Him on your shoulder for a while, I will take bath in Ganges and come back soon” and he left to take bath, but suddenly Lord Jagannath became so much heavy that the Brahmin could not hold Him on his shoulder, he started shouting, “Please come fast I am not able to hold Him.” But by the time Jagadish Pandit reached there, he already had put Him on the earth beneath a banyan tree. And Lord Jagannath did not move further from that place. Jagadish Pandit also did not go to his home. He also started living under the banyan tree and started worshipping Him there only. After that the King of Krishna Nagar and other devotees of that area donated one thousand acres of land for the service of Jagannath Dev. They gave so many things in donation because they were religious people. News spread in the area that Lord Jagannath Himself arrived from Purusottam-dham and He is being served there. But as time passed, it became very difficult for dynasty of Jagadish Pandit to maintain livelihood and service of Jagannath Deva. They started selling the land and slowly all the land was sold off. Only a small piece of land, Nalagram, remained. Later, economically they became unable to serve the Lord. So a devotee, Bandopadhyaya came to our Gurudev and requested him to take charge of that place. Gurudev told him that, “This place belongs to you, we will preach here and will give you money to maintain this place.” But later they requested again and again so Guruji thought, “Jagannath Deva wants to give us His service. So he accepted the service of Lord Jagannath and everything changed there. Before nothing was there but a broken temple, then later a nice temple and so many rooms were constructed. A snana-bedi (the place for bathing the deity) is also there, every year bathing ceremony takes place there. I go there every year but this year I could not go. From here we would remember Him and pay innumerable obeisances to His feet and pray for His mercy.
Jagadish Pandit and Dukhini Mata used to love Gaurang as their child. Nityanand is an extension of Baldeva and non-different from Him. Jagadish Pandit had great faith in both Gaura and Nityanand. Once Gaura-Nityanand came there and performed sankirtan and then left. They came again but when they were leaving, Jagadish Pandit and Dukhini Mata started crying. That time Guranga Mahaprabhu told them, “I will stay here as Gaura-gopal.” So the Gaura-gopal deity is there. Bhagavan Das Babaji Maharaj’s bhajan kutir is also there. It is a very auspicious place, non-different from Sri Purusottam-dham.
