Labdhva Sudurlabham Idam…

Harikatha, Sreela Bhakti Ballabh Tirtha Goswami Maharaj

At 1, Ultadanga Road Srila Bhakti Siddhant Saraswati Goswami Thakur used to deliver sermons on Srimad Bhagavatam which is the quintessence of all Scriptures. Many people used to come to listen him. There, he spoke on this particular verse from 11th Canto for one full month. Even after commenting on this verse for one month, he was not satisfied and wanted to speak more about it! Listening to his powerful teachings regarding the rarest opportunity of the human birth and its actual purpose, two students of Scottish Arts College, Kolkata, who were going back home after attending their college, could never go back home. They stayed in the Math for rest of their life. Such was the powerful preaching activities done by Srila Prabhupad. We cannot even imagine what he did.

  • I have heard from my most revered Gurudeva several times speak about his Gurudeva, our Param Gurudeva, grand Gurudeva, most venerable Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Goswami Thakur. We had no opportunity to see Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Goswami Thakur, we have seen only our Gurudeva. And Gurudeva in his delivering of sermons many times in different places reminded about him. Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Thakur first started Gaudiya Math in Kolkata at Ultadanga Road. Then afterwards they shifted it to Bagh-bazar now. First math was started at Ultadanga Road. There our Param Gurudeva Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Goswami Thakur was delivering sermons and many people were hearing. Anybody can come and hear. What happened there? He explained one verse from Srimad Bhagavatam, quintessence of all Scriptures. From the 11th canto, he explained that verse for one month. Still he was not satisfied, Can you imagine?

What is that verse? It is very important. ‘labdhva sudurlabham idam bahu-sambhavante manusyam arthadam anityam apiha dhirah turnam yateta na pated anu mrtyu yavan nihsheyasaya visayah khalu sarvath syat’. He explained this verse for 30 days yet he was not satisfied. I can say the meaning of that verse in five minutes. But that verse is identical with Krishna, Bhagavatam is identical with Krishna, one with Krishna and transcendental, it is transcendental sound. He (Krishna) is Infinite, Absolute, Complete Reality. Bhagavatam is also complete Reality. Nobody can finish. For the eternal benefit of the conditioned souls, of the neophytes or aspirants of pure devotion, what our Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu made pastimes at Puri? He heard Bhagavatam 7th canto Prahlad Charitra and 4th Canto Druva Charitra not once, hundred times from Gadadhar Pandit Goswami. After that again Chaitanya Mahaprabhu says I want to hear. I have not heard the full topic from beginning to the end (but I say) Oh I have already heard, I want to hear something new. Bhagavatam is identical with Krishna, nobody can finish by tasting its sweetness. If anybody says like that, it is wrong thing.

Brahma in his prayer to Sri Krishna in 10th Canto, said ‘jananta eva janantu kim bahuktya na me prabho manaso vapuso vaco vaibhavam tava go-carah’. What is the meaning of this verse? Brahma, when he was infatuated he could not understand Krishna, he made the pastimes of not understanding. But that was not mentioned by Vedavyasa Muni in the Bhagavatam. Vedavyasa Muni never said a word that Brahma was playing the pastimes. Because conditioned souls of this world have got vanity, they will misunderstand. Even the creator of all universes, creator of all living beings, brahma could not understand then you think about your position. if you have submitted to him then you could understand. In his prayer, what Brahma is saying, if anybody is saying he has comprehended, he has realized Sri Krishna completely that be so. I do not want to say much words, I do not want to speak grandiloquently, of bombastically. Let them say. They, the wiseacre may think we are wise persons. Let them say that they can understand.

First thing is this. There is no equal to Him and more than Him. If a human being, conditioned soul can know Him by his own caliber, by his own intellectual power, mental power, then God will lose His absolute position. Without His grace nobody can know. Grace always flows down. Water always flows down, not upwards. If there is any vanity that region is completely sealed. Nobody can enter, that transcendental realm is completely sealed. But if you take absolute shelter, He is so merciful. If you are sincere immediately you will get. He is so merciful. But we have got no belief. We want to know Him by challenging mood. Then His maya will envelop us. You will not be able to understand. As per degree of submission you can understand. There are degrees of submission ad infinitum.

In higher mathematics you will find, infinite plus something is infinite, infinite minus something is infinite, infinite minus infinite is also infinite. Nobody can know Him or can finish their realization of Supreme Lord. If anybody says (so), he has got no knowledge of Supreme Lord. Ad infinitum, it will go on for infinite times. Every time you will find new fresh sweetness, every time ‘pratipadam purnamrta swadanam’. How you will see? If they say they know, let them know. I do not want to say much words, ‘jananta eva janantu kim bahuktya na me prabho manaso vapuso vaco vaibhavam tava go-carah’. Even I could not understand His own personal associates, cowherd boys, what to speak of Krishna. I could not understand them, I lifted them. I could not understand His transcendental realm, what to speak of Supreme Lord Sri Krishna.

Therefore, here what Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Goswami Thakur (says) in this verse is very important. Nowadays you have to remember this and he spoke about this for one month and wanted to speak about it for another month, only one verse ‘labdhva sudarlabham idam bahu sambavante’. After numerous births, 8 million births you can get this human birth, after that 8 millions of aquatic animals, then trees, plants etc immobile living beings. Jagadish Bose, Scientist of India, Bengal, has proved that plants and trees have got life. It has already been written in the Vedas that the trees and plants they have got life, even mountains have got life. Immovable living beings 2 million and 9 hundred thousand aquatic animals, 2 million trees, plants, mountains etc immovable, immobile living beings. And worms 1 million, birds 1 million and beasts 3 million. After that 8 million births, after so much suffering, we have got this human birth. Let us think about it, 4 hundred thousand births, here it is mentioned we have got this human birth, but there is no guarantee that you will get this human birth again. No guarantee.

You have heard the name Bharath, the eldest son of Rishab Deva. He renounced his family and the kingdom in his young age and went to forest to perform penance. There he had a connection with one young-one of a deer. I do not want to say the history. At the time of death, he was thinking of that deer. ‘yam yam vapi smaran bhaavam tyajaty ante kalevaram tam tam evai ti Kauteya sadaa tad bhaava bhaavi tah’. At the time of death whatever you will think, you will have accordingly a birth. Such a person, who remembers that I came to the forest to worship Supreme Lord. By seeing one young-one of a deer I had some affection and gave some energy to him. At the time of death, I was thinking about him, that there are so many ferocious animals, who will protect him? While thinking like this I died, I was born as deer. Whatever we shall think at the time of death according to that you will get the birth, in Gita it is said clearly. Then, there is no certainty, although it is written four hundred thousand births, we say four lakhs human birth, but there may be slip.

This is one evidence from the scripture. And I have got practical evidence, in Assam, near Goalpara math. I do not want to say it, practical. He became a dog. There is no certainty. ‘Labdhva sudurlabham idam bahu sambhavante’. After numerous births, so many distresses and in the mother’s womb so many pains, suffering is extreme but those who have got their lively-hood by eating fish and flesh, they have killed all the fishes and beasts, they have killed so they have to suffer, tremendous suffering. We have passed through so many births like warm and birds etc and then we have got this human birth. ‘Sudurlabham’, after so much suffering, so much difficulty we have got this birth but it is non-eternal, transient, mortal. Any moment we may lose this chance. Nowadays nobody is said to be safe. In today’s situation of world nobody can say if he goes out he can come (back) alive. Nobody can say. Gradually it is deteriorating. Why we should make late? Just from this moment (start bhajana). When our Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Goswami Thakur was explaining this. one day, as I heard from our Gurudeva, two students of Scottish Arts College of Kolkata, they are coming from the college and going towards their destination. On the way they have heard that some great saint is there. Let us see. For seeing, with books they entered and saw Bhaktisiddhanta Saraswati Goswami Thakur, a dazzling personality, and golden complexion. They never saw such person. They were very much attracted (and thinking). He was explaining this ‘turnam yateta’. Don’t make late, immediately, just this moment(start haribhajan). Don’t spoil your time, a moment’s time without serving Krishna. You avoid unnecessary words, unnecessary things, do not do it. You have to repent if you do it. Any moment you may lose this human birth and again you shall get this human birth there is no certainty. ‘Turnam yateta’, so immediately you should start, he said this looking at the new two students. They sat at the end. They were afraid, what is this, this Swamiji was looking at us, why? He did not allow us to go from this place. They asked,”Swamiji, what you wanted to say? You do not allow us to go to our house? Oh No! We have committed a great mistake, (they thought) inside. Now they thought, how we can get ourselves freed from this place. We have to go back to our house.

They thought, Let us say this reason. “Swamiji, if my house catches fire, am I not to go there to extinguish it?”

“If your house will burn, what you have to do, nothing.”

“What sort of Sadhu! Even if My house gets burnt, you think it’s to be nothing?“

    “Yes, nothing.”

“If I could not extinguish that fire then other houses will burn.”

“Let the whole world get burn, what do you lose? You have come from the world? brahma-bhutah prasannatma, na socati na kanksati samah sarvesu bhutesu mad-bhaktim labhate param’, in Gita it is said. Brahma-bhutah, you are chetana. As long as that consciousness exists in your body so long you have got personality, thinking, feeling and willing. When it leaves the body, a dead body is not considered a person. It may be retained chemically for a long time. Nobody will consider the dead body as a person. Person is the consciousness. Consciousness has come from Consciousness. Nothing cannot be the cause of something. The highest Supreme Reality is All Conscience, All Knowledge, All Bliss, All Existence, He is Purna Saccidananda. You are coming from Him.” Taittiriya Upanisad says ‘yato va imani bhutani jayante yena jatani jivanti yat prayantyabhisamvisanti tad vijijnasasva tad brahma’. It is not Gaudiya math’s writing. All the jivas are coming from Para-brahma, Supreme Lord; coming not from impersonal form of Brahma, from ‘apadan karan’ that is ablative case. So, there is a form, transcendental spiritual form. He is not formless. All the jivas are coming and Brahma is maintaining them, sustaining them. This is instrumental cause, parama karan and where it will go, it will go to Supreme Lord. When there are 3 cases ablative case, instrumental case and vocative case (saptam vibhakti) how it can be impersonal? Supreme Lord is the Person Infinite, whole universe is coming out of Him. They are by Him, they are in Him. These 3 cases prove that Supreme Lord has got form. He has got qualities, transcendental spiritual qualities.

So here it is said, turnam yateta na pated anyu-mrtyu yavan nihsreyasaya visayah khalu sarvatah syat. Eternal Reality is Supreme Lord and we are eternally connected with Him. We have come from Him, in Him, by Him, we should remain for Him. This world has got no connection with you, with your soul. The whole world is burnt, what you will lose? You are from Krishna, you are in Krishna, you are by Krishna. You should start bhajan from this moment. If you go on the road, you may die.“

At that time when Saraswati Goswami Thakur was there, it was not so much rampant. Even that time he was saying it. But nowadays they are killing everybody without consideration whether there is enmity or not, to serve their purpose. Boys, children, and women without are being killed without any consideration whether enemies or not, destroying them. So nowadays by seeing this directly we should not sleep, we should not spoil our time. We should immediately start.

“Don’t go, on the road you may die.”

Then they could not go. They are attracted by his supernatural spiritual personality. They remained here, they did not go back.
