Day 31 : First Yam
Harikatha, Sreela Bhakti Ballabh Tirtha Goswami Maharaj
3:22 am to 5:46 am. Chanting of the Holy Name Sri Krishna, completely, loudly in the company of devotees and without tenfold offences, which can bestow seven attainments—viz. cleansing of the mind-mirror, extinguishing of the forest fire of birth, death and threefold afflictions, bestowing eternal soothing benefit like moonlight, life of spiritual learning i.e. awakening of the real self, increasing of the ocean of bliss, bestowing at every step sweet taste of complete transcendental ambrosia, holy immersion of body-mind-real self—be supremely glorified.

ata eva namābhāse sarva pāpa vināṣa āra samsara kṣaya
(Sri Bhakti-Rasamrita-Sindhu, Dakshin Part, 1/52)Therefore, glow of the Holy Name can destroy all sins and worldly bondage. But Namabhas also is not so easy. When there will be tenfold offences namabhas could not be manifested. And Suddha Nama 'sevonmukhe hi jihvadau svayam eva spuraty adah', when there is relation with Krishna and is inclined to serve Krishna and His devotees then the name will be manifested. The difficulty is this.
taṁ nirvyājam bhaja guṇa-nidhe pāvanaṁ pāvanānāṁ
śraddhā-rajyan-matir atitarām uttamaḥ-śloka-maulim
prodyann antaḥ-karaṇa-kuhare hanta yan-nāma-bhānor
ābhāso ‘pi kṣapayati mahā-pātaka-dhvānta-rāśimEven Namabhasa is very rare. Here the person who has got the aptitude to do Harinam, Krishna Nama, the Crown of all avataras, Original Supreme Lord worshiped by realized souls, Supreme Redeemer of all redeemers, but with firm faith, i.e.. to say without deceitfulness and at the earliest with simple-heartedness. There should not be any crookedness. Why? Even the glow of the Sun removes all darkeness like that glow of the Holy Name, not complete Suddha Name which is very difficult because there should not be any offenses and there should be knowledge of relation with Supreme Lord then Suddha Nama can be manifested, but even the glow of the Holy Name entering into the cave of the heart can destroy all great sins and nescience.
parama pāvana kṛṣṇa tānhānra charaṇa,
niskapata śraddhā saha karaha bhajan,
jānra nāma suryābhās antare praveśi,
dhvaṁsa kare mahāpāp andhakārarāśi,
ei śikṣāṣṭake kahe kṛṣṇalīlā-kram,
ihāte bhajan krame līlāra udgam,
prathame prathama śloka bhaja kichu din,
dvitīya ślokete tabe hauta pravīṇ
chāri śloke kramaśaḥ bhajana pakkva kara,
pañcam ślokete nija siddha deha vara,
ei śloke siddhadehe rādhāpadāśraya,
ārambha kariyā krame unnati udayaHow you can get the realization of the pastimes of RadhaKrishna, gradual procedure has been given here. Unless we have got our realized soul we cannot enter into the transcendental pastimes.
chaya śloka bhajite anartha dure gela,
tabe jāna siddhadehe adhikāra haila,
adhikāra nā labhiyā siddhadeha bhāve,
viparjya buddhi janme śaktira abhāveBy material mind we cannot think about this transcendental pastimes, it will be revealed in your heart. Pastimes are transcendental, atma is transcendental. When atma's real nature is manifested, the transcendental nature of the transcendental soul, then you can get it.
adhikāra nā labhiyā siddhadeha bhāve,
viparjya buddhi janme śaktira abhāve
sāvdhāne krama dhara yadi siddhi cāo,
sādhura carita dekhi śuddha buddhi pāo,
siddhadeha peye krame bhajana karile,
aṣṭakāla sevāsukha anāyāse mileAfter getting this realized state then you can relish the bliss of transcendental pastimes.
śikṣāṣṭaka cinta kara smaraṇa kīrtan,
krame aṣṭakāla-sevā habe uddīpana,
sakala anartha jābe pābe premadhana,
caturvarga phalguprāya habe adarśanaSeven principal attainments you can get by Nama Sankirtan, but all kinds of attainments.
ceto-darpaṇa-mārjanaṁ
bhava-mahā-dāvāgni-nirvāpaṇaṁ
śreyaḥ-kairava-candrikā-vitaraṇaṁ
vidyā-vadhū-jīvanam
ānandāmbudhi-vardhanaṁ
prati-padaṁ pūrṇāmṛtāsvādanaṁ
sarvātma-snapanaṁ
paraṁ vijayate śrī-kṛṣṇa-saṅkīrtanamChanting of the Holy Name Sri Krishna bestows principally seven attainments namely cleansing of the mirror of the heart, extinguishing of the forest fire of birth, death and threefold afflictions, eternal soothing benefit like moonlight, life of spiritual learning i.e. awakening of the real self, I am doing Harinam, but tremendous threefold afflictions, all these miseries are there, then there is no actual Harinam. If there is actual Harinam then this forest fire of all these worldly miseries will be finished. When it is not finished by this you can understand that actual Harinam is not manifested, increases the ocean of bliss, bestows at every step sweet taste of complete transcendental ambrosia, holy immersion of body-mind-real self – be supremely glorified.
saṅkīrtana haite pāpa-saṁsāra-nāśana
citta-śuddhi, sarva-bhakti-sādhana-udgama
kṛṣṇa-premodgama, premāmṛta-āsvādana
kṛṣṇa-prāpti, sevāmṛta-samudre majjana
(Chaitanya Charitamrita Antya 20.13-14)“By performing congregational chanting of the Hare Krishna mantra, one can destroy the sinful condition of material existence, purify the unclean heart and awaken all varieties of devotional service. The result of chanting is that one awakens his love for Krishna and tastes transcendental bliss. Ultimately, one attains the association of Krishna and engages in His devotional service, as if immersing himself in a great ocean of love.”
Thinking of Krishna-lila (pastimes of Krishna)
niśānte kīrtane kuñja-bhaṅga kare dhyāna,
krame krame citta lagne rasera vidhānMaterial mind cannot think about the transcendental pastimes. We have to be well-established in the teachings of Sikshastaka given by Chaintaya Mahaprabhu. Otherwise we cannot think, the material mind cannot think. We have heard that initially only Sikshastaka was chanted, contemplated upon and practiced during Kartik vrata and later practice of sravan-kirtan of asta-kaliya lila was introduced. Unless one is well-established in Sikshastaka, lila-sravan will not benefit.
Awakening of RadhaKrishna you can meditate, when you are well-established in the teachings of Sikshastaka. Then you can relish the transcendental bliss of the pastimes.
rātryante trastavṛnderita bahu-vira-vaibodhitau kirasārī
padyair-hṛdhyair api sukha-śayanād-utthitau tau sakhibhiḥ
dṛṣṭau hṛṣṭau tadātvoditarati-lalitau kakkhaṭīgīḥ saśaṅkau
rādhā-kṛṣṇau satṛṣṇāv api nija-nija dhāmnyāpta talpau smarāmiBirds can understand, at the proper time there should be awakening of RadhaKrishna, not in the night. It will be considered offence.
To take bath in the night is also prohibited in the Scriptures. But there is a competition in Purushottam Dhama. Some ladies they came and they are speaking to me, at 4 am I have taken bath, another woman says at 3.30, another 3, and another 2.30. There is competition who can take bath earlier. But it is prohibited. In the night one should not take bath, not only awakening of RadhaKrishna. What can be done? Everybody wants to use lavatory and they have wait in the queue or line. So they are forced to take bath in the night.
Apprehending day break, Vrinda Devi is very busy to awake RadhaKrishna. Vrinda Devi has engaged the birds to do this. Birds have this capacity to know the proper time of day break, they will start chirping, not before that. That is their special quality. For that they are not to see the watch. Human beings have to see the watch. And their chirping is not ordinary chirping. They are transcendental realized souls singing the glories of RadhaKrishna. You have already heard about it and there is competition. And along with it gopis are also doing singing through sweet sounds slowly, not by loud sound, so that RadhaKrishna may wake up willingly as per Their desire, not forcibly. So sweet singing, by hearing it, hearing it, Radharani opens Her eyes. That is good, not by force. Krishna's attention is on all, so also is Radharani's attention. When Radharani awakes gopis worries are over, till their responsibility is there they have difficulty. When their responsibility is over they feel peaceful. Now it is Radharani's responsibility to awaken Krishna. She is thinking now what shall I do? She cannot push Him to wake Him. It is not correct to wake even others, devotees this way. Krishna does not have His sleep like that of tamo gunis who go into deep slumber, His sleep is just an excuse, a pastime, to give service opportunity to that female monkey. So we have great convenience in doing Krishna bhajan, Krishna has attention on even very very insignificant servitor who serves even in a very small way. Gopis were compelled to give permission to the female monkey and she made a loud screaming sound. Then Krishna opened His eyes. Her harsh sound is very pleasing, sweet for Krishna, and for us it is harsh.
Our Prabhupad also performed a pastime. There is a devotee whose voice is not so good, but Prabhupad said I want to hear from him. His kirtan is good because the devotee has devotion, like this.
With wistful eyes both RadhaKrishna are mutually see each other. And it is high time and so They run towards Their respective houses and go to heir beds for sleep.
