Day 9: Gajendra's Prayers

Harikatha, Sreela Bhakti Ballabh Tirtha Goswami Maharaj

Srila Gurudev comments on the different qualities of Supreme Lord prayed by Gajendra like He is Swayambhu, there is no cause of Him, He is self-effulgent., He is unknown to all and principal demigods but yet He can be known through His grace, by surrender, by Bhagawat-dharma. On the explaining the nirgun aspect of Supreme Lord, Srila Gurudev emphasizes on the point that Mayavad conception destroys one’s devotion.

  • Topics Guruji has covered:

    1. Gajendra is submitting to Supreme Lord
    2. Supreme Lord is Swayambhu. There is no cause of Him, He is self-effulgent.
    3. Supreme Lord is unknown to all and principal demigods. But yet He can be known through His grace, by surrender, by Bhagawat-dharma.
    4. Vishnu is independent, He is nirguna
    5. Mayavad, once it gets into anyone, his/her bhakti gets destroyed.

Gajendra is having perturbation of the heart. The prayers he used to submit to his object of worship in his previous life, those hymns were revealed in his heart. He is saying — I am taking absolute shelter to Supreme Lord, who is all conscious substance, by which whole world and the living beings have got their life and consciousness. I have got the consciousness and I am feeling so much trouble. This crocodile is also feeling trouble. Where from have you got this [consciousness]? - From the Supreme Lord. Therefore He is all-conscious substance. Sunlight is coming from ‘Sun’ substance, like that from Supreme Lord all these livings beings are emanated. yato vā imāni bhūtāni jāyante, yena jātāni jīvanti yat prayanty abhisaṁviśanti tad vijijñāsasva tad brahma (Taittirīya Upaniṣad 3.1). He is Person and He is the cause of all causes - ādi-bījāya. He is Parameshwar, Lord of all Lords. I have taken absolute shelter to His Lotus feet. I am meditating because I am in a position where I am caught hold by crocodile. I cannot make obeisances so mentally I am doing dhīmahi [meditate upon the Supreme Lord]. This whole world and the incident where it occurred (Trikūṭa mountain), everything is within Him. All the planets are from Him and by Him. He and world are identical yet He is different from this. There are so many cause and effect but He is different from this. He is Swayambhu. There is no cause of Him. He is self-effulgent. I am taking shelter to Him.

During the day of Brahma we see the creation. In the night there is partial dissolution. Supreme Lord is only looking. All these creations, innumerable millions and millions of living beings are created and millions and millions are annihilated, He is only seeing — indifferently. Actually all these living beings, in their real self, are eternal. They have got no birth or death but they think like this because they have become averse to Me [Supreme Lord] and this external potency/illusory energy envelops them. What can I [Supreme Lord] do? I am only seeing, observing indifferently. Those who will take absolute shelter to Me, I can think about them. {He is at the back — we think we are seeing, we are hearing but without His power nobody can see, nobody can hear. Through His power everybody sees.} When Brahma’s life gets over then with the Brahma all creations also gets annihilated - total universal dissolution. Nothing will remain. Only darkness is there but beyond that our Supreme Lord is there with His paraphernalia with His all entourage and transcendental realm.

Aham — He is Person, cause of all causes. I am taking shelter to Him. The principal demigods like Surya(Sun) cannot know you than I [Gajendra] am an ordinary beast. How can I sing glories of Supreme Lord. I am ignorant. Brahma and Rudra cannot know Supreme Lord. All the other demigods, muni and rishis become infatuated to know Him. How can I sing His glories? I am only paying my obeisance to the lotus feet to the Supreme Lord who is unknown, what can I do?

Then He cannot be known? Yes, He can be known. When you shall try to know Him (by your capacity), He is not known. Without His grace nobody can know Him. Only way to know Him is pure devotion, Bhagawat-Dharma, total surrender. After submitting and taking absolute shelter to Him, after becoming of Him when we can perform devotional forms by that we can get [to know Supreme Lord], by Bhagawat-dharma.

Then He has got form. You see forms in this world. All the forms go through transformations. They have birth and death. Does Supreme Lord have such a form? No, No! He has got no such form. ‘Yasya, yahar’ denote a Person. That Supreme Lord to whom I am taking shelter, He has not got a form of this world. Whatever you see in this world birth, material actions, name and form, merits and demerits –

He doesn’t have these. He is beyond this. Yet by His will power He is creating through Brahma and He is destroying through Rudra/Mahadeva. They do it as per desire/direction of Supreme Lord. The Brahma has birth from the navel of Vishnu and creates all these things. But Vishnu is independent. For maintenance Vishnu appears. By Sattva guna everything is maintained but Vishnu is nirguṇa [untouched by material qualities]. By being nirguṇa, He is doing work of Sattva Guna — maintenance and sustenance. He is at His will, He is not subservient to anybody. He appears to rescue the fallen souls, to give them the service and His personal contact. By knowing Him, by worshipping Him those fortunate jivas will be rescued. Tasmai namah pareśāyā — Supreme Lord, by His will Brahma creates, by His will Rudra destroys. He Himself maintains, He Himself appears in this world with His transcendental form to rescue the fallen souls and to give His personal contact to the devotees who are grief-stricken(by His separation). He appears for the devotee and side by side all others are benefitted too. When Gajendra was praying, ultimately Narayana appears and by that whole atmosphere became holy and all the living beings of this world are benefitted.

[Srila Gurudev is referring to a conversation with a Mayavadi lady, when she was approached by Him for a donation. She said..] Everything is false. Whatever you are seeing, this world is false. Mayavad is spirited in her heart. I tried to explain but she was smiling. Everything is false! Then I said is everything false? You are within this world or outside? If you say the whole world is false then you are also false! Then I should not hear from you! Then the Brahmachari accompanying me said, “Don’t do like this else you will not get donation.” I said I do not like to get such donation. No need of getting donation. God will give. Mayavad, once it gets into anyone, his/her bhakti gets destroyed.
