Mind is Disturbed, Not Finding Taste in Harinam. What Shall I Do?

In answer to Sundar Shyam Prabhu's (from South India) question, Srila Gurudev responds saying associating with sadhu is the cure for nescience. Nescience is the root cause of not finding taste in harinam. Physical proximity is not sadhusang. Following the mentality of a sadhu is real sadhusang which is possible even being thousands of miles away from the sadhu.

  • You see, in Upadeshamrt, Srila Rupa Goswami has said:

    syāt kṛṣṇanāmacaritādisitāpyavidyā-
    pittopataptarasanasya na rocikā nu
    kintvādarādanudinaḿ khalu saiva juṣṭā
    svādvī kramādbhavati tadgadamūlahantrī

    Holy Name of Krishna, form, all attributes, and pastimes are very sweet like our sugar candy. There is no comparison here, in this world. We can say sugar candy. Very sweet. But when there is disease in the stomach, biliousness, sugar candy will taste bitter. Sugar candy is sweet, your tongue has become bitter. You can say sugar candy is bitter. No, it is not. The doctor, Ayurvedic doctor, says you have to take sugar candy water. When the sugar candy water enters into the stomach it will subside the biliousness. Gradually all biliousness will be stopped. Then you will be able to understand the sweetness of sugar candy. At first you will find it bitter. You should not think I should not take this. NO. You should take it as medicine nicely, like these, 'avidyā pitta', 'avidyā' means I am this body, I am this mind, I have got false conception of self and false conception of relation. I am of Krishna, I am related with Krishna. I have forgotten it. That avidyā is there, nescience is there. At that time Krishna nāma, when you utter Krishna nāma, you will not find sweetness. But you have to do Krishna nāma without offences. You should not stop it. Go on doing. When that nescience will gradually be removed, then you will be able to feel the sweetness of the Name.

    It will take time. Everything takes time. In this world also if you want to get some learning, you have to take pain for it. For this also you have to do Harinam without tenfold offence. But you should not stop this. You should associate with sadhus. But we say, “there is no sadhu”, wherever you are there you will get sadhu. God is everywhere. Sadhu is everywhere. You will get sadhu. From a distant place, you can have contact with Sadhu. By remaining near Sadhu, if we will remain there with non-mindfulness, then you have no association of sadhu. Sadhu is for the service of Krishna. I have slept near a sadhu, contacting my body with him. It is a physical contact only. Like bugs have contact with the body of a sadhu. What are they doing? They are sucking the blood. They are not following the thought of the Sadhu. They are exploiting, it is not sadhusanga. From distance we can have sadhusanga. Sadhu is thinking about service of RadhaKrishna, Gouranga Mahaprabhu, and I have to follow this, we have to follow this. From a distance you can absorb sadhusanga. From remaining near you may not. You have to accept the teachings of the Sadhu. Dhruva had what qualification? He got the vision of his Gurudeva, for once only. But he was successful. Why? He acted upon what his Gurudeva said. You have to act upon it. God is within you, seeing you, 'na hi kalyāṇa-kṛt kaścid durgatiṁ tāta gacchati'. He is seeing everything. If you are sincere you will never be deceived, for Krishna has given this promise, no fear. In the forest Narada came to Dhruva. Can he not come to you? He can, if you are very earnest.
