Tat-te Anukampam Su-samiksamana

Harikatha, Sreela Bhakti Ballabh Tirtha Goswami Maharaj

Srila Guru Maharaj explains the inner meaning of the shloka 'tat te 'nukampāṁ su-samīkṣamāṇo' from the prayers of Brahma to Sri Krishna. Votaries, who want to progress in spiritual life should give special emphasis on the subject spoken here. Gurumaharaj speaks on, who will get God, who will realize Supreme Lord Sri Krishna and who will get His service? He explains, "God is gracing you under all circumstances. In difficulties, at good times, bad times, whatever you are getting in this world, the Supreme Lord is gracing you. If you do not see His grace then you will not get it. When you see His grace even in distress then you will get Him. We are reaping the fruits of our own actions. Others are only instrumental, they are not the cause. If you blame others then you will not get God."

  • We cannot understand the teachings of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu and His personal associates without their grace, by the process of ascension, ārohavāda; by challenging mood, with material ego, material intellect, material mental capacity! Just the opposite, they could not understand the actual meaning because they are not surrendered to them. It will descend; Dham, the transcendental realm and Supreme Lord and His personal associates all are transcendental, spiritual. They descend in this world. They are not part of this material world. We think like that. Even Brahma who has created us, all the creatures here, by his order, could not understand Krishna as Supreme Lord. It is written in Bhagavat! There Vedvyasa muni has not written that this is his pastime. We may say because we are in the preceptorial channel. We remember Brahma. So Brahma performed this as a pastime. But why did Vedvyasa Muni not say anything about this? Because we are fools. We will understand, 'Oh! Brahma actually knows everything, but he has played the pastimes of not knowing.' Then the gravity will be lost. For that reason intentionally Vedvyasa Muni did not write anything saying Brahma had made the pastimes. No. When Brahma, the creator, could not understand how we can understand by challenging mood?

It will come through the preceptorial channel, bonafide preceptorial channel. If you take shelter; if you have the aptitude to take shelter completely, unconditional surrender, immediately you will get everything. All problems will be solved. You will get peace in your mind, bliss and you will give it to others. He is equal to all.

    samo 'haṁ sarva-bhūteṣu
na me dveṣyo 'sti na priyaḥ
    ye bhajanti tu māṁ bhaktyā
    mayi te teṣu cāpy aham
    (Bhagavad Gita 9.29)

(The Supreme Lord says,) “There is no enemy to Me.” But when we shall go by challenging mood, we shall now see whether Chaitanya Mahaprabhu is correct or not, whether Nityananda Prabhu is correct or not, whether His personal associate, Srila Saraswati Goswami is correct or not, Bhaktivinoda Thakur is correct or not, like that, if we have that sort of ego, we shall go to hell. Nothing will come, everything will be destroyed. He will be out and out atheist, with a challenging mood if he goes. But if he submits,

    sarva-dharmān parityajya
    mām ekaṁ śaraṇaṁ vraja
    ahaṁ tvāṁ sarva-pāpebhyo
    mokṣayiṣyāmi mā śucaḥ
    (Bhagavad Gita 18.66)

as Krishna says in the Gita. You do not want to believe in this. With a challenging mood then our spiritual life will be lost. Nobody can rescue us. It is coming through the preceptorial channel. Very easy and very difficult. If you take the submission, if you are simple-hearted, then very easy. If there is duplicity in your mind, crookedness and all this sort of ego, material ego then you can have no progress in spiritual life. No progress. How will Krishna appear? Krishna will not appear. He is for Himself and by Himself. He is not for anyone. If I take shelter, then He will come. If I do not take shelter, how will He come?

In Western philosophy also they say 'Absolute is for itself and by itself'. We do not say 'It God'. We say 'He God'. Absolute is for Himself and by Himself. One thing we see in Srimad Bhagavatam, Vedvyasa Muni has written. Very carefully, we have to think about this. Who will get God? Who will realize God, Supreme Lord? Sri Krishna who will get His service? In one verse,

    tat te 'nukampāṁ su-samīkṣamāṇo
    bhuñjāna evātma-kṛtaṁ vipākam
    hṛd-vāg-vapurbhir vidadhan namas te
    jīveta yo mukti-pade sa dāya-bhāk
    (Srimad Bhagavat 10.14.8)

Our Gurumaharaj used to explain this verse very nicely. I am remembering that; tat te 'nukampāṁ su-samīkṣamāṇo. If ordinarily you see, you observe, then you will not be able to understand that God is gracing you under all circumstances.

In difficulties, in good times, bad times, whatever you are getting in this world, the Supreme Lord is gracing you. If you do not see His grace then you will not get it. Īkṣamāṇo means to observe ordinarily, samīkṣamāṇo—thoroughly, even by thoroughly seeing we may commit mistakes, su-samīkṣamāṇo—nicely, minutely and thoroughly if you see in every circumstances; bad and good circumstances, He is gracing. When you see His grace even in distress then you will get Him. If you blame others then you will not get God.

Bhuñjāna evātma-kṛtaṁ vipākam—we are reaping the fruits of our own actions. God is everywhere. Without His knowledge nothing can be done. We had many of our births, millions of births, what we did we do not know. We are reaping the fruits. Others, they are only instrumental, they are not the cause. If you think there is somebody who is hostile to me, then your going to the Supreme Lord is destroyed immediately. You will not get Him. You will find in the biography of Dhruva. Why did Chaitanya Mahaprabhu hear Dhruva, the biographies of Dhruva and Prahlad repeatedly, why? What is the reason? He appeared with the form and mode of worship of Radha-Krishna to taste His own sweetness. What is the reason for His hearing about biographies of Dhruva and Prahlad hundred times and again He wants to hear. He is teaching us, those who are conditioned souls of this world, all votaries who want actual eternal benefit, spiritual benefit, devotional benefit, for them.

Be very very careful. You should see the grace of the Supreme Lord under all circumstances and don't blame others for your distress and sufferings. If you blame, then you will not get as per Dhruva (Charitra). You have gone through Dhruva? I say I have gone through Dhruva, please speak something new, this I know. But why did Chaitanya Mahaprabhu hundred times repeatedly hear? Dhruva is a pure devotee. He is transcendental, Prahlad is also transcendental. You cannot finish by hearing. The Supreme Lord is infinite, His personal associates are also infinite. Nobody can finish by talking about them. If anybody says I have finished, as our Swami Maharaj used to say Fool No.1. He is Fool No.1. F O O L. Nobody can finish speaking about Krishna and Krishna's devotees. He is infinite. As per our degree of submission, to that extent they will appear; that is not the last, it will go on ad infinitum. That is the transcendental realm; it never becomes stale; always fresh fresh fresh. Narada Goswami always chanting the holy name and he is relishing it at every step, every step; prati-padaṁ pūrṇāmṛtāsvādanaṁ; it will never become stale; holy name, holy pastimes, forms, attributes of Sri Krishna are not stale. Like that the holy pastimes and teachings and qualifications or attributes of śuddha-bhakta are not stale.
