Lord Nityanand's Potency: Jahnava Devi

Harikatha, Sreela Bhakti Ballabh Tirtha Goswami Maharaj

Nityananda Prabhu expands his divine potencies to shower mercy upon the enslaved jivas, offering himself as the sole support for the fallen. His marriage to Vasudha Devi and Jahnava Devi is a transcendental event. During the wedding, Nityananda Prabhu manifested Himself as Balarama, accompanied by His consorts Revati and Varuni, bestowing divine darshan upon all those present.

  • Jahnava devi is the potency of Lord Nityanand. Srila Narottam Das Thakur write in a Giti, vrajendra-nandana jei, śacī-suta hoilo sei, balarāma hoilo nitāi—The son of Vrajendra (Nanda Maharaj) has come as the son of Sachi Devi and Balaram has become Nitai (Nityanand Prabhu). Nityanand Prabhu is Lord Balaram Himself, If someone thinks Him to be an ordinary human being then Vrindavan Das Thakur, the author of Sri Chaitanya Bhagavat, says that he will beat that person with his feet, lāt maro tār sire . That means Vrindavan Das Thakur will forcefully give the dust off his lotus feet to that unfortunate person. Will he not get liberated? Revati and Varuni both are potencies of Lord Baladeva. They both appeared as Jahnava and Vashudha respectively, in the house of Suryadas Sarkhela. Suryadas saw that his daughters were not ordinary. Their conduct and dealings were transcendental, so he was worried about their marriage. How will he find persons with such transcendental conduct? In his dream, he also saw them as Revati and Varuni with Balaram, but he could not comprehend that. One day, a Brahmin came to him and said, “Do not worry! Lord Balaram is their husband. He appeared as Nityanand Prabhu, the son of a Brahmin couple, named Hadayi Pandit and Padmavati Devi in the village of Ekachakra.

Suryadas went to Ekachakra Dham and took the Darshan of Nityanand Prabhu. Niyanand Prabhu would expand His potencies and shower His mercy on the jivas. He will become the sole support for the enslaved jivas. Who delivered Jagai and Madhai? Nityanand Prabhu. Srila Narottam Das Thakur writes in a Giti, dīna-hīna jata chilo, hari-nāme uddhārilo, tāra śākṣī jagāi mādhāi—the Holy Name delivered all those souls who were lowly and wretched. Jagai and Madhai are the evidence of that. The wedding of Nityanand Prabhu with Vashudha Devi and Jahnava Devi is transcendental. During the wedding, Nityanand Prabhu gave Darshan as Balaram along with His potencies Revati and Varuni. We do not believe it! Bhaktivinoda Thakur, who is the fountainhead of everything and whose kirtans we sing every day, has written,

    bhavārṇave pa'd̯e mor ākula parāṇ,
kise kūla pā'bȏ, tā'r nā pāi sandhān

“I have fallen in the vast ocean of material existence of births and deaths and do not even know how to overcome it.”

    nā āche karama-bala, nāhi jñāna-bala,
    j̑āga-j̑oga-tapo-dharma—na āche sambala

“I have not performed any good Karma (fruitive activities) based on which you can shower your mercy upon me. I do not have the strength of Gyan (speculative knowledge). Even, I have not performed any Yagya (sacrifices), Yoga (Yoga practices), Tapsya (austerities) or Dhyan (meditation) also.”

nitānta durbala āmi, nā jāni sā̃ntār,
e bipade ke āmāre kȏribe uddhār

“I am extremely feeble, and I do not know how to swim to cross it. How will I get rescued from this dreadful calamity?”

    biṣaya-kumbhira tāhe bhīṣana-darśana,
    kāmer taraṅga sadā kore' uttejana

“I see the horrible crocodile of sense gratification present before me and ready to engulf me, the waves of lusty desires are constantly agitating and provoking me.”

    prāktana-vāyur vega sahite nā pāri,
kā̃ndiyā asthira mana, nā dekhi kāṇḍāri

“Urges of so many bad karmas of my previous birth are now perturbing me. I am not able to cope up with them. I simply weep with an agitated mind. I do not see any rescuers.”

ogo śri jāhnavā devi! e dāse karunā,
    karȏ' āji nija-guṇe, ghucāo ĵantraṇā

    Who is saying this?

Whose shelter will we take now in this devastating situation? Jahnavadevi, she is a woman, but is she an ordinary woman?

The potency of Lord Ramchandra, Sita Devi, she also is a woman, is she an ordinary woman? She proved her sanctity by entering into the transcendental fire. She entered into the fire and came out from it. Is this possible?

They showed their divinity, but still we committed an offence. Without getting the mercy of Sita Devi you will not get the mercy of Lord Ramchandra. For the welfare of jivas, she herself took pain. But worldly people do not understand this. They always see defects in others. They do not see their faults. Dhruva's mother advised him, “See, you will not get the desired result if you have any personal grudges or hostile mentality towards your stepmother while performing Bhajan. Your stepmother is not responsible for your afflictions. In the past, You have given pain to someone, so you are getting the pain in return as a result (fruit ) of that Karma. The Supreme Lord knows everything. While performing Bhajan if you hold a personal grudge against anybody then you will not get perfection. Do not blame anyone for your sufferings. Jivas get the sufferings which they had incurred upon others. Others are not the cause. You are the only cause for your sufferings. They are only instrumental.” After hearing this from his mother, Dhruva immediately eradicated all the hatred for his stepmother from his heart. He went into the jungle calling out the name of Lord Shri Hari from the core of his heart. He is crying. Here, in the kingdom, King Uthanapada and all others are also crying. Lord Sri Hari was satisfied with him.

    Bhaktivinoda Thakur further writes,

ogo śri jāhnavā devi! e dāse karunā,
    karȏ' āji nija-guṇe, ghucāo ĵantraṇā

    tomār caraṇa-tarī kȏriyā āśroy,
    bhavārṇava pār ha'ba kȏrechi niścoy

Do you have faith in Nityananda prabhu? How will you get His mercy? Do you have faith in Ram? How will you get His mercy? How will you have Darshan of the sun God? Without the rays (potency) of the sun, how will you be able to see the sun? So,

    tumi nityānanda-śakti kṛṣṇa-bhakti-guru,
    e dāse korohȏ dāna pada-kalpa-taru

Hey Jahanva Devi! Whatever desires we submit at your lotus feet, they all will be fulfilled. Only you can fulfil our all desires.

    katȏ katȏ pāmarere ko'recho uddhār,
tomār caraṇe āj e kāṅgāl chār

Today is her appearance day. I spoke very briefly.

    vāñchā-kalpatarubhyaś ca kṛpā-sindhubhya eva ca
    patitānāṁ pāvanebhyo vaiṣṇavebhyo namo namaḥ
