Ravan Kidnapped the Illusory form of Sita Devi

Mahaprabhu told him, “Ravan is in the mode of ignorance, while the Supreme Lord and His potency is above the three modes of material nature. How can he have the sight of the Lord’s potency? No one can see Her with material eyes; no materialist has such power. To say nothing of touching mother Sita, a person with material senses cannot even see Her.

  • When Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu arrived at Madurai, also known as Southern Mathura, in South India, He met a Brahmin who was a great devotee of Lord Ramachandra. He invited Mahaprabhu to his house for Prasadam. Being satisfied by seeing his devotion, Mahaprabhu accepted his invitation and went to his house for afternoon Prasadam. The Brahmin prepared so many items and offered them to Lord Ramachandra and Sitadevi. He served the Prasadam to Mahaprabhu. Mahaprabhu accepted His service with satisfaction. Mahaprabhu observed that the Brahmin did not eat anything on that day. Mahaprabhu thought he might be observing some vow. The next day, he also prepared many varieties of food items and served Mahaprabhu, but he did not have anything. Then Mahaprabhu got worried, thinking, “Why is he not having Prasadam? Two consecutive fasts are not advised anywhere; why is he observing fast for two days?”

Again, on the third day, the same thing happened, and that time Mahaprabhu asked him, “You prepare so many food items and offer them to Lord Ramachandra, but you are not accepting the Prasadam? One should honor Prasadam as a limb of devotion. If you do not do so, your body would become weak and you would not be able to serve the Supreme Lord properly.” Then the Brahmin replied, “I have no reason to live. I shall give up my body.”

    Mahaprabhu asked, “Why?”

He replied, “Mother Sita is the mother of the universe and the Supreme Goddess of all fortune. How can a demon like Ravan, who is in the mode of ignorance kidnap my worshipable Goddess? I am troubled upon hearing this news. I am not able to tolerate it, so I want to leave my body.”

Mahaprabhu told him, “Ravan is in the mode of ignorance, while the Supreme Lord and His potency are above the three modes of material nature. How can he have the sight of the Lord’s potency? No one can see Her with material eyes; no materialist has such power. To say nothing of touching mother Sita, a person with material senses, cannot even see Her. When Ravan kidnapped Her, he kidnapped only Her material, the illusory form. As soon as Ravan arrived before Sitadevi, She disappeared from there. He kidnapped an illusory, material form. Even Ravan cannot see Her, how can he kidnap Her. Spiritual substance is never within the jurisdiction of the material conception.”

Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu then assured him, “Have faith in My words and do not burden your mind any longer with this misconception. You honor Prasadam”

Later, when Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu went to Kanyakumari-Rameshwaram , He listened to Kurma Purana from the Brahmins there, wherein it came the mention of Ravan kidnapping the illusory form of Sitadevi. Mahaprabhu brought the Purana to the Brahmin and showed him what was mentioned in it. Then the Brahmin became free from his worry. In Ramayana, the pastimes are mentioned, but the real implication of such pastimes could be understood only by the Supreme Lord and His associates.
