Remembering Srila Bhakti Kumuda Santa Gosvami Maharaj

Harikatha, Sreela Bhakti Ballabh Tirtha Goswami Maharaj

I got the opportunity to listen to his kirtans at Sree Gauranga Math, Kesiadi. He sang the kirtan 'Gopīnāth, mama nivedana śuno'. He knew all the kirtans by heart and his performance of nritya(dance)-kirtan would leave the audience spellbound. I have not seen anybody perform kirtan like him ever, for hours together. His voice was mesmerizing. Also, he was a very powerful speaker.

  • I got the first Darshan of Srila Bhakti Kumud Santa Goswami Maharaj at Medinipur Math. Srila Bhakti Vichar Jajavar Goswami Maharaj and Srila Goswami Maharaj were also present there at that time. Those days I used to stay at Sree Chaitanya Gaudiya Math, 8, Hazra Road, Kolkata. I received the instructions of Srila Gurudev while staying there and came to Medinipur Math. Medinipur Math was established by the combined efforts of Srila Gurudev, Srila Jajavar Goswami Maharaj and Srila Santa Goswami Maharaj. The name of the Math is 'Shyamananda Gaudiya Math'. Later Srila Santa Goswami Maharaj preached the message of Sriman Mahaprabhu in that region and established 'Sree Gauranga Math' in Kesiadi. Srila Maharaj's appearance place is in Medinipur district. The name of the place is Narma. Medinipur previously was in Odisha state. This is the appearance place of Srila Shamananda Prabhu and Srila Rasikananda Deva Goswami also.

Srila Santa Goswami’s parents were Vaikuntha Nath Ray and Srimati Ratnamayi Devi, respectively. All the members of his family had special quality of singing kīrtans. They were three brothers. The name of eldest brother was Radheshyam, younger to him was Radhamadan Mohan and the youngest was Radharaman who later became Srila Bhakti Kumud Santa Goswami Maharaj.

Srila Prabhupad kept the same name (Radharaman Brahmachari) for him even after he joined the Math. He started staying in the Math at a very early age of 11 years. He used to attend school while staying at the Math. The name of the school where he studied was 'New Indian School'. Santa Goswami Maharaj appeared on Krishna Dvitiya in the month of Vaishaka, 1321 Bangabda (1914 A.D.). He hailed from a devotional background family. His voice was very melodious and he used to sing very nicely. I got the opportunity to listen to his kīrtans at Sree Gauranga Math, Kesiadi. He sang the kīrtan ‘gopīnāth, mama nivedana śuno.’ He had memorized each and every kīrtan accurately. He used to perform singing of kīrtans and nṛtya (dancing) in such a manner that all the onlookers used to become spell-bounded. I have not seen anybody performing kīrtan like him ever for hours together. His voice was mesmerizing. He also was a very powerful speaker.

He established another Math at Kharagpur. A big printing press was also established by him over there. He had an assistant named Sagar Maharaj. Sagar Maharaj was very sincere in his service and was very humble by nature. He used to stay at Kharagpur Math. We used to go there during the annual function of the Math every year where nagar-sankīrtan was organized.

He also established a Math in Jagannath Puri Dham which was situated near the ocean. We stayed in the Math for almost three years while trying to revive the appearance place of Srila Prabhupad. We could have stayed anywhere near the appearance place of Srila Prabhupad but if we would have done so then the tenants from whom we were trying to revive the place of his appearance would have had known about our whereabouts and all our activities. For this very reason we chose not to stay in any other place than Srila Santa Goswami Maharaj’s Math. We got the opportunity to have his audience every day. There was an old devotee lady (disciple of Srila Santa Goswami Maharaj) who used to stay in the Math and used to prepare prasadam for the deities. She used fed me with affection. Gauranga Prabhu (Acharya Maharaj) was there with me that time. All the efforts to revive the appearance place of Srila Prabhupad, registry of the Math and all other formalities were done while staying at Srila Santa Goswami Maharaj's Math.

Srila Maharaj also established a Math at Behala, Kolkata. In reference to that, Srila Maharaj wrote one article which was published in our magazine. He wrote, "After constructing the Math at Behala, I saw that the adverse and turbulent situation of that place was uncongenial for devotion. I became disturbed. I was not able to find any solution for the situation from any direction from my end and started wondering, “Where shall I go? What shall I do?” I had brought the deity to establish in this Math but the situation there was completely unfavorable. Everything was against us. I decided that I shall not establish the deity there. There were too many difficulties and I do not want to get involved in any awkward incident. I decided that I shall keep the deity at Srila Madhava Maharaj’s Math and leave my body."

Srila Gurudev (Srila Bhakti Dayita Madhava Goswami Maharaj) and Srila Bhakti Pramode Puri Goswami Maharaj then consoled him and asked him not to become disturbed. That time, Srila Maharaj had kept the deity in the care of a household devotee in Behala. Suddenly a wonderful incident happened there. Srila Maharaj was thinking of taking the deity to my Gurudev's (Bhakti Dayita Madhava Goswami Maharaj’s) place but at that very moment the deity opened up the stone casing in which He was kept and stood up, Himself. Maharaj took that as the wish of the deity which was as, “I shall stay here only." Maharaj thought, "Even before His installation He is performing such a pastime! What is this! He wants to bless the residents of this area. It is His wish." After this pastime, Srila Maharaj regained his enthusiasm and established the Math there.

I have gone to Kharagpur Math many a times during the annual function. I also have gone to Sree Gauranga Math at Kesiadi and to Behala Math located in Kolkata.
